Let us face facts. Some healthy foods simply do not taste as good as the high-fat, high-sugar, high-calorie foods that we all know and love… Yes, donuts we are looking at you! Maintaining a healthy diet can be a difficult task, but now that we’re in the food-freedom year of 2019, it doesn’t need to be a huge challenge to find some good-tasting, good-for-you ingredients. There’s plenty of options you can take to find the best-tasting alternatives to the foods that just aren’t good for us.
Here are some of what we think are the best healthy food substitutions that can make a massive difference to your long-term health. We believe they are pretty fair swaps. Let’s take a look.
Hummus instead of...mayo
If you’re a sandwich lover, then mayonnaise is more than likely your spread of choice. We hate to break it to you but mayo in notoriously high in saturated fat, so why not use the chickpea-based hummus instead for a healthier choice of moistening up the sandwich. Plus, we think it actually tastes a whole lot better.
Side salad instead of...fries
Eating out can be a major flaw in your habits if your health kick doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. It’s all too easy to opt for the side of fries when you’re treating yourself to a tasty meal. So why not compromise and enjoy the burger or hotdog to your heart’s content, but instead accompany it with a side salad rather than the calorific fries. It can make a whole lot of difference!
Popcorn instead of...chips
There’s nothing better than a bag of chips and an ice cold beverage on a relaxing Friday evening, and eating a whole bag of your favorite chips to yourself is a common occurrence nowadays too. If you’re someone who loves to snack on high-fat chips, then popcorn can be a great substitute with less fat, fewer calories, and more protein. Win-win!
Coconut cream instead of...heavy cream
Adding cream to some of your favorite dishes can be an all too tempting habit to give it that rich, saucy goodness, but instead, how about using coconut milk/cream. It’s a whole lot better for you with far less fat content, plus it’s a great-tasting versatile dairy-free alternative. It’s excellent for richening up curries, sauces, stroganoffs, and more!
Cauliflower instead of...potatoes
Ahhh potatoes! Often the heart of every meal...the versatile King of the vegetables...if you count a potato as a vegetable? Well, there is one actual vegetable that can make a brilliant alternative to the humble potato, and that is the cauliflower. With far fewer calories and carbs, the cauliflower can be just as warming and wholesome as the potato - great made into mash, soups, hash browns, and more!
Eating healthy doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor and comfort. Keeping these simple healthy alternatives in the fridge can be the minor difference that massively improves your diet. Taking smaller steps, building better habits, and making these simple swaps can make healthy eating so much easier.
