Benefits Of Adding Oil To Puppy Food

Puppies (and dogs) need a balanced diet to ensure that they grow and thrive. While humans need to keep their fat consumption low, dogs need more fats in their diet. In fact, oils can help your puppy live a longer, healthier life if administered correctly.

Why oil?

The result of a diet low in fat is an unhappy, unhealthy puppy. He or she might develop a dull coat, or dry, itchy skin, or even suffer hair loss. A low-fat diet can weaken the dog’s immune system, and lead to diabetes and heart disease. Oils and fats are also essential to facilitate the absorption of many vitamins.

Constipation is a common problem in puppies. It can be caused by diet changes, dehydration or anxiety. Adding the correct amount of oils to your puppy’s diet can help relieve constipation. It can also help reduce obesity and prevent damaging free radicals.

What kind of oils should you use?

Two popular and healthy oils for your pup are olive oil and fish oil. Fish oil is available in capsule form that you can cut open. You can also find bottled fish oil or the popular alternative, flaxseed oil, in pet supply stores. Use only100% olive oil and not a mixture of inferior oils. You can also use coconut oil to your pup’s food.

Before using oils

Before adding oils to your puppy’s diet, consult your veterinarian or a canine nutritionist to make sure that you are doing the right thing. They will help you establish how much oil you should be giving your pup. This will depend on the dog’s size, weight and any medical issues the dog might be having.

In what quantity?

If you are using fish oil, give your puppy 100mg to 150mg per 10 pounds of body weight. If your puppy is having health issues, a dose of up to 300mg may be given. With olive oil, give your puppy between ¼ and ½ teaspoon twice a day on his food. Never give a dog more than ½ teaspoon of olive oil at a time.

What are the risks?

Too much oil can cause diarrhea. Make sure to mix the oil into the puppy’s food. Be careful with fish oil. Some dogs cannot handle it and develop nausea and vomiting. Store all oils in a cool, dark place to prevent them from going rancid.
